Semantic Problems ofIidioms Translation

In order to correctly make English Russian translation of a book, newspaper article or any type of creating writing one shall know how to translate correctly from English to Russian idiomatic expressions.
Weshall now have a close look at some peculiarities ofidiomatic expressions. An important point which must be stressed is that idiomatic expressions are not only colloquial phrases, as a lot of people think. They can be found in formal style and in colloquial speech. They can emerge in verse or in the language of Dickens and newspapers.

What, then, is an idiom? One can say that an idiomatic expression is a collocation of elements which, if found in the same place, mean something unlike from the separate phrases of the idiomatic expression when they are placed separately. The way in which the phrases are put together is often funny, strange or in some cases grammatically wrong. These are the special peculiarities of some idioms. Other idioms are completely common and reasonable in their grammar and vocabulary. Due to the individual features of some idiomatic expressions, we have to learn the idiom as a whole and we occasionally cannot amend any part of it (except maybe, only the tense of the verb).
English is very rich in idioms. Actually, it is hard to speak or write English without using idiomatic expressions. An English native speaker is sometomes not aware that he is using an idiom; perhaps he does not even understand that an idiom which he applies is grammatically incorrect. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main aims, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically wrong causes him trouble. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It is impossible to be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of words. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is often understood from the vocabulary.
